Final Fantasy 2 throws you into combat immediately. Firion, Maria, Guy, and Leon flee the Empire's attack on Fynn, but four Black Knights catch up. This fight is unwinnable. Attack, defend, it doesn't matter. You're going down on their first turn.

Altair

You wake in Altair, headquarters of the Wild Rose rebellion. Princess Hilda runs the resistance from the hideout here; her advisor Minwu healed your wounds. Leon is missing, last seen during the ambush. Maria's worried, but there's nothing you can do about it yet.

The Keyword System. Talk to Hilda in the throne room and she mentions the password Wild Rose. FF2 has a unique keyword system: when you "Learn" a keyword, you can "Ask" NPCs about it to unlock dialogue and progress the story. Learn Wild Rose now, then ask Hilda about it. She explains it's the insignia of the kingdom of Fynn, representing hope for a flourishing future. Ask Minwu (standing beside her) too; he confirms you're allies.

Equipment and Grinding. You start with 400 Gil. Before buying anything, give Guy a sword in his off-hand. Swords are the strongest weapon type in FF2, and you'll want one character focused on them for the weapon level 16 trophy. Guy stays a physical attacker all game, so he's your best choice.

Visit the armor shop and buy Leather Gloves for each party member (3 total). See the Altair town guide for full shop inventory. Fight enemies on the world map near Altair: Leg Eaters, Goblins, and Hornets. Grind until you've got around 700 Gil total. Stay close to town and use the Inn when needed.

Once you have the Gil, visit the magic shop and buy Cure, Fire, Thunder, and Blizzard tomes. Teach Cure to Firion; he'll be your white mage. Give Fire, Thunder, and Blizzard to Maria for black magic.

Gatrea

Go northwest from Altair to find Gatrea. The enemies along the way are the same Goblins and Hornets you've been fighting.

Gatrea is a small town with basic shops.

Fynn

From Gatrea, head west until you hit the ocean, then north through the forest. Follow the crescent-shaped body of water on your right, then cut east and south when mountains block your path.

Fynn is occupied by the Empire. You can enter the town but not the castle. Don't bother with any buildings except the pub. Do not talk to the enemy captains walking around. They're extremely dangerous and will wipe your party. You'll also get random encounters while walking through town.

Walk to the top of town, then take a right on the grass around the trees and wall. Follow the outside wall south until you reach the pub.

The Secret Pub Room. Inside, avoid the soldiers and make for the bartender in the top right. Ask him about Wild Rose. He recognizes you as a rebel and reveals a secret door in the wall behind him.

Go through the passage to find a wounded soldier and three treasure chests.

Scott's Final Message. Open all three chests, then talk to the wounded soldier in the bed. Ask him about Wild Rose. He reveals himself as Scott, prince of Kashuan and Hilda's betrothed.

Scott's dying. He asks you to deliver messages: tell his brother Gordon he has great strength and should have more faith in himself. Tell the King that Count Borgen betrayed Fynn to the Empire. Borgen's now an Imperial general. Scott almost asks you to tell Hilda he loves her, but stops himself. "The confessions of a dying man would only bring her pain."

He gives you his Ring as proof you found him, then passes.

Joining the Rebellion

Leave Fynn and retrace your route back to Altair. Be careful: there's no Inn in Fynn, so you might be low on HP and MP. Avoid unnecessary fights if you're hurting. Rest at the Inn in Altair, then return to the rebel hideout.

Talk to Hilda and use the Key Items command to show her the Ring. She recognizes it as Scott's and is saddened by the news. But she's impressed you infiltrated Fynn and returned alive. She admits she underestimated you.

Hilda gives you your first real mission. The rebellion needs Mythril for weapons. She's charged a man named Josef in Salamand with finding a source, but they've lost contact. Go find him. Learn the Mythril keyword.

Talk to Minwu (standing beside Hilda). He joins your party and gives you a Canoe for crossing rivers. He's a guest character, so don't waste resources on his equipment.

Talk to Hilda again to learn more keywords:

  • Dreadnought — the Empire is building a massive warship in Bafsk
  • Airship — a man named Cid in Poft built one and ferries travelers

With the Canoe, you can paddle north from Altair directly into the water and reach Paloom faster.

Next: find Josef in Salamand, then push on to Semitt Falls to rescue trapped miners and get the Mythril. The journey takes you through Paloom and Poft.
